If you don’t have a home security system installed in your house, then you’re as much as 66% more likely to have your home broken into at some point in time. Just because you live in a peaceful neighborhood or belong to the neighborhood watch doesn’t mean that your home is safe. Don’t wait until something happens before you decide to install a security system. Even the most basic system can deter potential burglars, and provide you with peace of mind.
One of the first questions that you’ll need to ask yourself when you decide to get a home security system is whether you want to purchase an indoor or an outdoor security system. Standard indoor security systems work by checking for two things – the opening of doors and windows, or signs of movement inside of your home. This type of system is accessed and armed through a control panel. By punching in a code on this panel, you can arm or disarm your security system before entering or exiting your home. This system typically involves having sensors installed at the windows and doors, and motion sensors throughout the house.
The second type of security system is known as an outdoor home security system. This system is set up to monitor the grounds around your home. They can also be installed on the driveway so that your car can be protected as well as your home. These systems are programmed to turn on flood lights installed around your property at the slightest hint of movement. Older models experienced a lot of false alarms due to stray animals or debris traveling across the lawn, but newer models are now programmed to check the size and weight of the intruder before triggering an alarm. Thanks to these updates in the system, there are fewer false alarms.
Another thing that you may want to look into adding to your security system is video surveillance. This normally consists of several transmitters set around your property and one receiver, which may be connected to your television or VCR. There are wireless setups available, meaning that the only visible cable will be the one that connects your receiver to your television. Some people prefer to set up fake surveillance cameras instead of setting up real ones. The fake cameras are much cheaper, and though they won’t give you a record if anything does happen, they’re often enough to deter a potential burglar. Most don’t want to risk getting caught on film, so the sight of a camera will cause them to avoid the property.
When you decide to get a home security system, be sure that you get a risk assessment. Many home security companies will offer a free risk assessment, which will help you in deciding which system will be right for you. Even if you don’t want to spend much on a system, you can still obtain a basic setup for a minimal price. Also be sure that you inspect your home regularly to make sure that there are no weak points that would make it easier for someone to break in.
