DON’T FALL VICTIM TO CRIME – MAKE YOUR HOME SECURITY A PRIORITY
Just like a car, a home security system needs regular servicing and maintenance to ensure it operates effectively and reliably. However, people seem far more concerned with looking after their cars or their lawnmowers than they are with ensuring their alarm systems are in good working order which means they could be putting themselves and their property at risk.
It doesn’t cost the earth to maintain a security alarm system, but yet many people overlook it.
Think about this :
· In a 5-year study by Newark’s Rutgers University School of Criminal Justice, it was found that residential burglar alarms decrease crime, and that in areas where there were many houses with burglar alarms, there were fewer incidents of residential burglaries than in areas that didn’t have as many . Other research claims that household alarms can lead to a 40% reduction in the likelihood of a burglary.
· Insurance cover may be compromised if the alarm system is shown to be faulty or not maintained properly.
Additionally, many modern alarm systems are fitted with smoke detectors, which not only detect smoke but can also detect deadly carbon monoxide which rises faster than smoke, providing an early warning for danger. It goes without saying that a faulty smoke detector would be tragic.
Another consequence of a poorly maintained home security system is frequent false alarm activations which can lead to a situation where the authorities, neighbours etc see the situation as ‘cry wolf’ and won’t respond in a real emergency – plus it often leads to alarms simply being deactivated which puts the security of the residence at risk.
It’s best to keep the operating instructions readily available, and heed the manufacturer’s advice on what the maintenance schedule should be.

· Test your system often. If you have a monitored system, first inform the security company and then do the testing.
· Check that all activating units, audible warning devices (bells, sirens) are in good working order.
· The back-up battery must be checked and should be clean and not corroded, with the voltage checked. Battery life should be no less than 8 – 12 hours.
· Keep sensors free of dust, insects and spider webs as these can activate the alarm – and it may be wise to spray with insect killer.
· Overhead components, wiring and conduiting should be checked for damage.
· Check that equipment is well ventilated.
· Other parts, such as remotes, motion sensors, exterior beams etc need to be checked, batteries checked and replaced if need be.
Alarm systems should also be checked for functionality after severe electric storms or if there have been noticeable power surges as these can cause false alarms and can compromise the structure of an alarm.
Naturally, an alarm system isn’t the one and only deterrent against burglaries. To protect your property, family and your assets, all other crime prevention elements need to be in place including perimeter fencing, door and window locks, exterior lighting, security signage etc.
