Cracked Cement Driveways: DIY Repairs
Small concrete driveway cracks can be fixed using silicone and a shop vacuum. Remove any dust and loose material in and around the cracked cement with a small brush and/or the shop-vac. Fill the crack with the silicone, and use a Popsicle stick or finger to smooth it out. Paint thinner can be used with a finger or a damp cloth to get a smoother silicone finish.
Larger concrete driveway cracks can be repaired using commercial grade concrete repair kits from manufacturers like 3M, Ace, Cutter, DAP, Diteq, Henkel, Nova, Protective Coating, Quikrete, Red Devil and Seal-Krete. To repair cracks in your driveway, you’ll need a shop-vac, a right angle hand held grinder with the right size grinding wheels for chasing the crack and finish grinding, masonry sand and a trowel and mixing bucket.
Make sure any large pieces of cement and gravel are removed from around the crack on the driveway before using the grinding wheel. Then follow the crack with your handheld grinding wheel, grinding the crack to a depth of 1/2 to 3/4 inches along its entire length. When done grinding, use the shop-vac to remove all of the dust and debris from the crack and surrounding work area.
Use the primer that came with your concrete repair kit to fill the crack. If you’re repair kit only came with a single product, use it as the primer too. Pour a fine layer of masonry sand over the primed area and let it sit until it’s dry. Drying times can vary anywhere from 10-30 minutes, depending on the crack repair product being used.
Once the primer is dry, fill the crack with your liquid commercial crack filler, and while it’s still wet, fill the crack with masonry sand. Using a trowel, now scrape off the excess sand and compound mixture and place it in a bucket. Use the damp sand mixture to fill any holes or cracks that where missed, or aren’t completely full. Once the repaired concrete has dried sufficiently, use a grinding wheel to blend the surfaces for a visually appealing finished product.
