In the 14th century, one had to be a member of a guild before becoming a recognized locksmith. The guild had to approve a candidate’s design and working lock for membership. The guilds gained control over locksmithing by regulating techniques and prices.

Historically, a locksmith would design, manufacture and assemble a lock from beginning to completion. Hand-cutting and filing parts, he would work for hours. Today this is no longer the case since most lock parts are mass-produced. Swapping out broken parts with good ones simplifies lock repairs.
